Drove across to the west coast, following the sun. Tramped the first day up the Heaphy trek, a truly stunning coastal day shaded by Nikau palms and massive ferns. White and pink beaches with tumbling boulders protect us from the wild sea that crashed about beside us. We even saw a kiwi which is amazing as they're nocturnal and rarely glimsed. We all felt very lucky. Lucky until we realised why noone lives around this lush beachy coastline. Sandflies... tiny harmless looking midges with a bite as itchy as anything. Terrorising anything that stops to breathe in the same spot for more than a few seconds. We picked up our pace and completed the walk in good time!
